Harare – The allocation of residential stands to Members of Parliament is above board after media reports alleging bribery, the government said Thursday.
“To date Parliament of Zimbabwe has been allocated residential stands in Goromonzi (188), Bulawayo (49), Chiredzi (12), Kadoma (9), Beitbridge (5),” the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works said in a statement.
“On the 9th of April 2025 the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works allocated a total 70 stands in three location as follows: Killarny -Goromonzi (15), Penrose- Zvimba (15) and Mabelreign – Harare (40).”
“In implementing this programme, government is fulfilling it’s commitment of enhancing the welfare of Honourable members, as it is doing for war veterans, women, the youth and civil servants,” the ministry added.
The Public Works ministry said MPs from 2013 to date will benefit from residential land allocations.
Social media was awash on Thursday with reports that MPs were involved in a shady land deal with City of Harare as a form of a ‘bribe’ to thwart a move to impeach President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In 2022, Zimbabwe MPs were given US$40 000 housing loans. The then Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Nelson Chamisa tried in vain to prevent his MPs from taking the loans.
