Victoria Falls – One person died and five others were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in hit an elephant near Zimbabwe’s resort town of Victoria Falls on Wednesday evening.
The vehicle ploughed into a female elephant as driver was avoiding another vehicle in the front that had stopped to allow a herd of elephants passing the road.
The accident accused about 40 kilometres from Victoria Falls.
According to police the collision occurred when a Toyota Isis vehicle traveling toward Victoria Falls attempted to overtake a stationary vehicle with its hazard lights activated, unaware the other driver had stopped to avoid an elephant on the road.
Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution when travelling during the night in areas where there is big game like elephants.
Elephants move in herds of up to 30 animals and move at night in some cases.
Human wildlife conflicts are common in Zimbabwe. The country has over 80 000 elephants in the game reserves spread across the country.
