Vatican – Roman Catholic Cardinals on Thursday elected American Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope.
Prevost will be known as Pope Leo XIV. He is the first Pope who was born in the United States of America.
Pope Leo XIV replaces Pope Francis who died recently.
”The Cardinals gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel have elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope, who took the name Pope Leo XIV,” the Vatican said.
White smoke appeared on the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in earlier moments in a sign that new Pope has been elected.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th Successor of Peter by the 133 Cardinal electors on Thursday, May 8.
