Blantyre – Former Malawi president Peter Mutharika has won the presidential election beating incumbent Lazarus Chakwera by a huge margin the country’s electoral Commission said.
The Malawi Electoral Commission said Mutharika secured 57% of the votes, against the 33% of current President Chakwera.
Chakwera conceded defeat on Wednesday after days of keeping quite when Malawians had already known that he had been defeated.
Mutharika,85, returns to power after he was dramatically unseated by a court ruling which brought in Chakwera.
Mutharika is the brother of the late former Malawi president Bingu Wa Mutharika.
Chakwera lost the elections because Malawians have long accused him of corruption and failing to rescue the ailing economy.
