Dodoma, Tanzania – Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been declared the winner of the presidential election with garnering 98 percent of the votes in a violent poll that left hundreds dead.
”I hereby announce Samia Suluhu Hassan as the winner of the presidential election under the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party,” Jacobs Mwambegele, the electoral chief, said while announcing the results on Saturday.
Hassan served as Tanzanian President from 2021 after the death of John Magufuli.
She has been accused of rights abuses.
About 32 million people voted in elections that the oppotion has said was deeply flawed.
Violence followed the Wednesday elections that left at least 700 people dead and thousands injured.
Internatioal observers have condemned the use of violence and lack of transparency in the election.
The government shutdown the internet which made communication difficult in the country.
They were two main opposition contenders – Tundu Lissu, who is being held on treason charges, which he denies, and Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo party – but he was excluded on legal technicalities.
Young protestors have been leading demonstrations across Tanzania in the past days.
