KuGombo, South Africa – Firebrand South Africa opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in jail for discharging a firearm at a rally.
Magistrate Twanet Olivier sentenced Malema to five years in jail while in other four charges he was given options to pay fines of R20 000 each.
Malema,45, is the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), South Africa’s fourth largest political party in the southern Africa country.
Malema has said he will appeal both the conviction and sentence at the High Court.
He accused Olivier of being a racist.
Thousands of EFF supporters gathered outside court singing and dancing in support of Malema.
