Ngezi, Zimbabwe – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday commissioned a 38 Megawatt smelter and 35 Megawatt solar plant at the Zimbabwe Platinum (Zimplats) mine in Ngezi.
”It is my honour and privilege to declare
the 38MW smelter and the 35MW solar plant at Zimplats’ Selous Metallurgical Complex officially commissioned,” Mnangagwa said.
”The commissioning of the 38MW smelter and the 35MW solar plant embodies the vision of an industrialized
Zimbabwe, powered by sustainable energy, where communities thrive, jobs are created, and skills are transferred.”
Mnangagwa the solar plant at Zimplats will provide eight percent of the electricity requirements at the mine.
The mine invested US$37 million for the project.
The 35 MW solar plant is the first phase of 185 MW solar plant that Zimplats intends to construct at the mine.
Part of the delegates that attended the commissioning of the smelter and solar plant include vice president Constantino Chiwenga, Zimplats chairperson Professor Fholisani Sydney Mufamadi and chief executive officer of Implats, Zimplats parent company, Nico Muller.
