Harare – Opposition leader and President of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), Douglas Mwonzora on Thursday said he supports the statement by retired Zimbabwe army Generals who are against the amendment of the constitution that seek to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office by two years.
Speaking at a press conference at the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House in Harare, Mwonzora said the army Generals are correct to reject constitution amendments.
”They (retired army Generals) are speaking like patriots. We need to pay attention to them,” Mwonzora said.
”There is absolutely no justification for this constitution amendment.”
”We are being re-colonized here,” Mwonzora said.
He said the amendments are “a serious betrayal of the liberation” and that it is a “coup” against the 2013 constitution.
Mwonzora said the retired army Generals brought independence to the country and their voice against the constitution amendment bill number 3 must be listened to.
He said Mnangagwa who has said he doesn’t want to go beyond 2028 must now come out to reject the amendments.
”This is the time to Mr President to dissuade the persuaders,” Mwonzora said referring to Mnangagwa’s response that he would persuade anyone not to persuade him to rule until 2030.
He said the MPs and Mnangagwa are seriously conflicted with the proposed amendments because they will benefit from the term extension of their terms from 2028 to 2030.
”There is serious conflict of interest,” Mwonzora said.
”Definitely I know Zimbabweans will do something about that.”
Retired Zimbabwe army Generals led by Air Marshal (Retired) Henry Muchena wrote to parliament saying the ex-combatants were against the proposed constitution amendments.
