Harare – Retired Lt. General Anselem Sanyatwe on Friday officially handed over the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) command to Lt.General Emmanuel Matatu at Charles Gumbo barracks in Harare
Sanyatwe who is now Sports Minister was replaced by Matatu in a major shake-up by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the military in what many analysts say was a way to keep control of the army after reports of discontent.
Army chief, General Valerio Sibanda, the commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) witnessed the hand-over take-over ceremony in Harare.
Mnangagwa changed command positions of most barracks across the country since war veteran Blessed Geza called for his resignation.
Geza has said they would remove Mnangagwa through an impeachment process accusing the veteran ruler of corruption, nepotism and mismanaging the economy.
The 31 March strike saw at least 90 people getting arrested for protesting, however most Zimbabweans stayed at home on the day of the protests.
