Pretoria – South Africa police commissioner, Fannie Masemola was charged in court for corruption involving R360 million Medicare24 tender scandal that was awarded to alleged underground crime boss Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
Masemola who is under suspension appeared wearing a formal jacket at Pretoria magistrate court.
He will be jointly charged with Matlala and 15 others on 13 May when the case continues.
Masemola,61,faces four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
He has told reporters that he is innocent.
South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to appoint an acting police commissioner in the next few days.
This is not the first time that a South African police chief has been arrested.
The late Jackie Selebi was convicted for corruption in the past years for receiving gifts from criminals.
South Africa is riddled with massive crime that range from corruption, murders, robberies, rape and organized crime.
