Harare – The ZANU PF youth league has condemned controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo proposed donation of US$3.6 million to Members of Parliament who were set to receive US$10 000 each.
The announcement by Chivayo was met with condemnation from ordinary people who saw the donation as a bribe to legislators ahead of the constitutional amendment bill number three debate in parliament.
The bill seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa term of office by two years from 2028 to 2030.
War veterans and retired senior army chiefs have condemned the bill saying the charter amendments must be brought to a referendum.
”As the Youth League, we firmly take a stand against any attempts real or perceived to influence any arm of Government, be it the Executive, the Judiciary or the August House of Parliament,” John Paradza, the ZANU PF youth league chair said in a statement.
“Parliament is the backbone of democracy, where the desires, needs and aspirations of the Zimbabwean people are turned into laws, oversight and accountability. If he wishes, Mr Chivayo can instead undertake developmental initiatives within communities directly, rather than through State institutions.”
“We trust that he was either ill-advised or acted without a full appreciation of the proper role and functions of Parliament. Going forward, he must be guided accordingly,” Paradza said.
Chivayo retracted his pledge on Tuesday apologizing for allegedly trying to capture parliament, however he pledged US$5 million to ZANU PF 10 provinces who are set to receive US$500 000 each.
Chivayo has been donating cash and cars like confetti at a wedding to whoever he wishes to give.
He is a very close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chivayo’s influence has extended to the region where he has regular meetings with presidents from Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi among others.
