The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) expresses profound grief and outrage following the tragic loss of three workers who died after a glass pallet fell on them at their workplace.
Our visit to the workplace today revealed that this was not merely an accident; it raises grave concerns of negligence, regulatory non-compliance, and the continued casualization of labour in clear violation of the laws of Zimbabwe. Our observation is that the workers were working without adequate machinery and safeguards.
Preliminary information also indicates that the deceased workers were engaged without formal contracts, a practice that undermines their legal protection and dignity as workers. Such conduct is inconsistent with the provisions of the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01] and exposes workers to unacceptable risks.
ZCTU notes, with serious concern, the possible breach of occupational safety standards as prescribed under the Factories and Works Act [Chapter 14:08]. Employers have a non-delegable duty to ensure a safe working environment. Any failure in this regard, particularly where it results in loss of life, must attract the full force of the law.
We therefore demand:
• An immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the incident;
• The prosecution of any persons or entities found culpable;
• Full compensation to the families of the deceased workers;
• The urgent regularisation of all workers without contracts;
• A nationwide audit of workplace safety compliance.
This tragedy underscores a broader systemic crisis where workers, many already earning below the poverty datum line, are subjected to precarious and unsafe conditions in pursuit of survival. The ZCTU shall exhaust all means to secure justice for the deceased employees and secure decent work standards for the remaining employees of Good 5 Investments.
ZCTU therefore, calls upon the Government, through Ministry of Labour, NSSA, and all relevant enforcement agencies, to act decisively and ensure that no employer operates outside the law with impunity.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and stand in solidarity with all workers exposed to unsafe and exploitative conditions.
