Kwekwe – Zimbabwe police on Wednesday said 12 people were killed in a road traffic accident near Kwekwe when a fuel tanker truck collided with a van, which blocked traffic near Sebakwe river for hours.
”The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 200 kilometre leg along Harare-Bulawayo road near Kwekwe on 27th May 2025 in the morning,” the police said.
”Twelve people were killed when a petrol tanker with two trailers, two tonne truck and Nissan AD Van with occupants collided near Sebakwe river.”
The police said people in the AD van were trapped when the fuel tanker fell on top of the van.
”The fuel tanker first hit the two tonne truck as it was going in the opposite direction. It then had a head on collision with the AD Van going in the opposite direction. Subsequently, the tanker dragged the AD Van for several metres and then overturned before falling on top of the AD Van,” the police said.
The fuel tanker was travelling from Harare to Kwekwe.
The police did not release the names of the deceased.
Road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe are caused by bad potholed roads, human error and faulty cars.
On Tuesday a fatal road traffic accident killed four people at the 34 kilometre peg along Masvingo-Mbalabala road when a Govasberg bus collided with a tractor.
Another bus accident in early May in Gweru near Fairmile hotel killed five people.
