Bulawayo – The High Court in Bulawayo has dismissed an urgent application by the ZAPU party to stop hearings of the Gukurahundi atrocities of the 1980s that killed thousands.
High Court judge, Munamato Mutevedzi said the application by the Zimbabwe People’s Union (ZAPU) was not urgent.
The government initiated hearings of the Gukurahundi massacres which happened in Matabeleland and Midlands province in the early 1980s is led by Chief Mtshane Khumalo the president of the Council of Chiefs.
The Gukurahundi hearings were expected to start at the end of last month.
However, ZAPU president Sibangilizwe Nkomo (on main picture) said his party will continue to fight for justice.
“We want justice for people who were killed, women who were raped. As a peace-loving organisation, we seek an amicable resolution,” Nkomo said after the court ruling.
Nkomo and his ZAPU party are contesting the manner in which the Gukurahundi hearings are being done and that biased traditional chiefs are playing a key role.
