Ahmedabad, India – A London-bound Air India plane crashed in a residential area shortly after take-off killing at least 260 people with one British national passenger surviving the accident.
Air India says 241 people on board the plane were killed – one passenger, a British national, survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.
The crash killed 24 people who were on the ground.
The airplane was a Boeing Boeing 787-8 number AI171.
India’s Home Affairs minister named the survivor as Vishwashkumar Ramesh.
“Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise… it all happened so quickly,”Ramesh said.
The plane had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, Air India said.
India Prime Minister, Narendra Modi said the tragic air crash is heartbreaking.
“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” Modi wrote on his X handle.
Investigations on the cause of the air crash are currently underway.
