Harare – Businessman Simon Rudland has denied social media reports that he is funding activists to oppose constitutional amendment number 3 which seeks to extend Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office to 2030.
”I would like to state clearly that the allegations circulating on X suggesting that I am funding any programmes related to Constitutional Amendment #3 are completely false,” Rudland told Timely News.
Social media reports suggested that Rudland is working with exiled politician Saviour Kasukuwere and Danmore Mambondiani after he provided funds to oppose constitutional amendment number 3.
”I have no involvement in such activities.These claims appear to be unfounded and misleading,” Rudland said.
Rudland, a multi-millionaire has businesses in Africa in sectors such as logistics, mining, agriculture and manufacturing among others.
Zimbabwe cabinet recently approved constitution amendment number 3 process which awaits public hearings and debate in parliament.
A group called Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF) was recently formed and is made up of opposition and civic society activists.
The CDF and the Professor Lovemore Madhuku National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) have vowed to oppose the amendment of the constitution.
If the constitution amendments are approved by parliament, Mnangagwa’s term will be extended from 2028 to 2030.
