Chegutu – In a shocking case of domestic violence, a 23-year-old man from Chegutu has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Chegutu Magistrates Court after being found guilty of attempting to murder his 1-year-old stepson.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) the man was also accused of threatening to kill his 18-year-old wife during a domestic altercation but he was acquitted of that charge due to insufficient evidence.
The incident occurred on March 2 this year at a farm compound in Selous.
Circumstances are that during a heated dispute the man’s wife sought refuge at a neighbour’s house and left her 15-month-old son.
Around 10:50 PM, she returned upon hearing her child crying and discovered her husband strangling the infant with an electric cable.
She quickly intervened and managed to rescue the child who sustained neck injuries.
The man attempted to flee the scene but was caught by alert neighbours.
