Harare – A Harare man has lost US$280 000 cash after the money he kept in a wardrobe was stolen from his home in Madokero surburb, police said.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the man who they did not identify reported that he lost his money after unknown person or people broke into his house.
”The ZRP is investigating a case of unlawful entry into premises and theft that occurred in Madokero, Harare, on 30/05/25. A 39-year-old man lost US$ 280,000.00 in cash after an unknown suspect broke into his house and stole a small bag containing the money, which was in the wardrobe in his bedroom,” the police said.
The police did not give details of why the unidentified man kept such huge sum of cash at his home.
Cases of armed robberies have been on the rise in Zimbabwe over the last years due to the harsh economic crisis with robbers targeting companies and people holding large sums of cash.
Some Zimbabweans including some foreign nationals such as the Chinese and Indians do not bank money instead keep cash in their safes at home or at their businesses.
Last year, robbers in Bulawayo stole US$4 million from Ecobank cash-transit cash. The robbers are yet to be apprehended.
Following years of bank troubles with depositors losing money, some people do not trust to keep money at banks.
Some banks collapsed while currency changes made people lose their money after monetary authorities changed policies overnight.
Zimbabweans prefer to keep their money in US dollars than the local currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZIG) which is weaker than the greenback.
