Kariba – Police in Zimbabwe on Thursday said the death toll from the Lake Kariba boat that capsized on Tuesday has risen to 46.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the death toll rose to 46 from 44 as operations to find missing bodies continue in the vast Lake.
”The ZRP advises Zimbabweans and relevant stakeholders that the death toll in the Kariba RIDA boat accident is now 46,” the police said.
”In the same vein , the names of the victims who perished in the accident will be released in due course.”
A memorial service for some of the victims who drowned from the Tuesday boat accident was held in Kariba on Thursday.
Hundreds of people gathered in Kariba at a funeral ceremony where dozens of coffins were paraded and were prepared for burial.
A sombre atmosphere engulfed Kariba resort town in the past days since the disaster was reported.
About 67 were rescued after the accident and the ferry had over 120 people according to reports.
Kariba is a tourist resort destination and the Kariba Lake divided between Zimbabwe and it’s northern neighbour Zambia.
