Kariba – The death toll from the Lake Kariba boat accident has reached 72 up from 46, Zimbabwe police said on Saturday.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) issues a statement saying 22 bodies were recovered on Saturday at Lake Kariba.
The ferry was owned by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA).
”The ZRP advises Zimbabweans and relevant stakeholders that the death toll in the Kariba RIDA boat accident is now 68 following the recovery of 22 bodies on Saturday,” he police said before adding that three more bodies were recovered late in the evening on Saturday.
“The Kariba RIDA boat accident death toll is now 72 after the recovery of 3 more bodies late on the 15th of August 2026. Meanwhile the identification of the bodies recovered today is in progress.”
The deadly accident occurred on Tuesday at the vast Lake Kariba which borders Zimbabwe and it’s northern neighbour Zambia.
The ferry was overloaded when it left Kariba with many toddlers with their mothers.
The Captain, Sign Patsikadova also died during the accident.

About 67 people were rescued alive after the accident occurred when a huge wave from the Binga side hit Lake Kariba.
