Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday said he does not need to tell the nation whenever he wants to travel outside Zimbabwe after he went on a secret trip to Belarus.
Mnangagwa was responding to questions from the government media at State House about the lack of transparency to his trip to Belarus last week.
”When I go out I don’t go to villages and say I am going out of the country. Should I go around saying I am going out to visit?,” Mnangagwa said.
”The King just goes away whenever his time has arrived to travel.”
Mnangagwa as reported by online media and on social media left the country during the evening without the usual airport parade when he bids farewell to his senior aides before he boards a plane.
However, last week left the country in the wee hours of the evening.
A day after he left Belarus state media then published pictures of Mnangagwa having a meeting with Belarus President Vladimir Alexander Lukashenko.
Mnangagwa and Lukashenko have close relations.
Mnangagwa did not give details of his meeting with Lukashenko and why he left the country without announcing.
Lukashenko has used state security apparatus to violently hold on to power.
Zimbabwe is at a crossroad as Mnangagwa and his government pushes the constitution amendment bill to be made into law.
The bill seeks to extend Mnangagwa’s term on office from 2028 to 2030.
The majority of Zimbabweans have expressed disapproval of the pending bill.
