Mutare, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s plans to extend his rule beyond 2028 to 2030 is getting close to fruition as the just ended ZANU PF conference resolved to expedite the agenda with legal processes.
The ZANU PF conference which ended in Mutare on Saturday resolved to push legal processes to extend Mnangagwa’s term of office with another two years.
This will delay retired army General Constantino Chiwenga’s plan to replace Mnangagwa.
Chiwenga helped Mnangagwa take office after leading a military coup against long ruling late Robert Mugabe in 2017.
Mnangagwa also succeeded in placing his reported chosen successor Kuda Tagwirei into the Central Committee of ZANU PF.
Analysts have said factional fights are likely to escalate in the coming months between camps led by Mnangagwa and Chiwenga.
”It is going to be ugly. Gloves are off,” an analyst based in Harare said.
Mnangagwa is accused of being associated with corrupt people like Tagwirei, Wicknell Chivhayo and Paul Tungwarara among many others.
Chiwenga on the other hand has been vocal against corruption. He produced a dossier of people accused of corruption but it was ignored in the politburo.
