South Africa, Tswane – South African actor Presley Chweneyagae has died, the family confirmed on Tuesday, without giving any details.
He was 40.
Chweneyagae rose to global fame when he played a leading role in the crime movie, Tsotsi that won a global award.
When Tsotsi won an Academy award, Chweneyagae was 21.
Chweneyagae was born on October 19, in 1984 in Mafikeng, North West of South Africa.
He trained at several arts schools that include Market Theatre Laboratory, and National School of the Arts among others.
Chweneyagae acted in several films that include Tsotsi, Silent Voice and Mandela;Long Walk to Freedom, among a long list of productions.
The Chweneyagae family will issue a statement in due course.
Hundreds of people on X expressed sadness and shock at the sudden death of Chweneyagae.
“Gone too soon! The arts fraternity has been dealt a heavy blow in the passing of Tsotsi talented actor.What a loss!#RIPPresleyChweneyagae,” Titus Tshungu wrote on X.
Fikile Mbalula, ANC secretary general said on X; “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Presley Chweneyagae. A true giant of South African film and theatre, his legacy in Tsotsi, The River, and beyond will live on. Condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his brilliance. 🕊️ #RIPPresleyChweneyagae.”
Netflix South Africa wrote: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the talented Don Presley Chweneyagae. One of our own ❤️💔.Rest in Power 🕊️.
