Harare – Prosecutors in Zimbabwe on Thursday withdrew charges on opposition leader, Jacob Ngarivhume who faced charges of participating in an illegal gathering of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) meeting last year.
Ngarivhume was charged after 78 CCC supporters and officials who include Jameson Timba were arrested last year in June for celebrating ‘June 16’ day of the African child.
The CCC activists spent several months in remand prison.
”The state has withdrawn charges against myself and Kevin Gonde. I was arrested on 2 August 2024, spent 3 months at Chikurubi Max prison while the state was opposing bail. I remained on remand since then coming to court every two weeks,” Ngarivhume said outside court.
”After a year of persecution, they withdraw charges. I was never at the said meeting because l am not a member of the CCC party. They knew it but rather they have always chosen to persecute me because l stand up to corruption. Shame on you, shame shame shame.”
Ngarivhume thanked all the people who supported him during his persecution.
He said his lawyers did a splendid job that resulted him in being freed by the courts.
”I want to appreciate all citizens who stood with me throughout this unjust and cruel persecution. I appreciate the hard work of my legal team, Tonderai Bhatasara and the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who supported my legal fight against this senseless persecution,” he said.
”The struggle continues, we keep fighting until we achieve a Zimbabwe good for us all. God bless you.”
