Harare – The United States embassy in Harare has warned people who travel to the give birth for their children to earn citizenship will result in visa bans.
”Using a visa to travel primarily to give birth for U.S. citizenship purposes is not permitted,” the US embassy said.
”Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent. Visa misuse can lead to denial or future bans, especially if public funds are involved. Don’t risk your visa.”
A baby born in the United States is generally considered a U.S. citizen at birth, regardless of the parents’ citizenship or immigration status.
This is due to the principle of birthright citizenship, primarily guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The 14th Amendment states that all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens.
The only exceptions to this rule are children born to foreign diplomats serving in the U.S.
