Lusaka – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has won the presidential election with 60 percent of the votes cast, election officials said early Tuesday.
Hichilema,64, leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND) was re-elected after beating his main rival opposition leader Brian Mundubile who got 38 percent of the votes.
The other 12 candidates who contested in the presidential race got few votes.
Mundubile,55, leader of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) has accused the military of involvement in the tallying of the votes.
His house was raided by the military of Friday while scores of opposition figures were arrested.
Mundubile is reportedly hiding at a United Nations offices in Lusaka fearing arrest.
Zambia is facing an economic crisis that has seen ordinary people facing hardships.
The southern African country is working on a new programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to rescue the ailing economy.
