Harare – The Zimbabwe police on Wednesday banned carrying of traditional weapons such as catapults, machetes, axes, knives and knobkerries ahead of planned mass protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government next week.
“Any traditional weapons, whatsoever likely to occasion public disorder or a breach of the peace, hereby issue an order prohibiting the carrying of such weapons in Harare district or any part thereof for a period not exceeding two months that is from 27 March 2025 to 31 May 2025,” the police said in a statement.
“Any person who fails to comply with such a prohibition shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level 5 or imprisonment for six months or both such fine and imprisonment.”
The police said weapons such as ‘catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives or daggers,’ must not be carried around.
Police are in panic mode after war veteran, Blessed Geza called for mass protests against Mnangagwa and his government on March 31.
Geza accuses Mnangagwa and his government of corruption, nepotism and running down the country.
Mnangagwa’s regime has said Geza is a fugitive from justice as it was announced that the former liberation war combatant is wanted by police on charges of undermining Mnangagwa and inciting violence.
