Harare – Police in Zimbabwe have intercepted the smuggling of 15 kilogrammes of gold worth US$1.5 million that was hidden in a Toyota Prado vehicle.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said three suspects were arrested.
”The ZRP confirms that a tip was received on 19/08/25 that gold was about to be smuggled out of the country whilst hidden in a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser vehicle,” the police said.
”Detectives from CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit tracked the vehicle leading to the arrest of three suspects and the subsequent recovery of 15,7 kilogrammes of gold valued at USD 1 568 860.00.The gold has since been taken to Fidelity Gold Refinery, Msasa. Investigations are in progress.”
Gold is one of the many easily available minerals in Zimbabwe. Small scale miners contribute most of the gold produced in Zimbabwe.
Gold smuggling in very rife in Zimbabwe and the Chinese have been accused to lead the syndicates that smuggle gold outside the country.
