Norton, Zimbabwe – A Norton magistrate, Christina Nyandoro court on Wednesday acquitted Theresa Chenjerai and Munyaradzi Zakkaria of trying to bribe a police officer with US$150 for him to testify favourably for an armed robbery suspect.
Chenjerai and Zakkaria were facing a charge of allegedly trying to bribe a Detective Sergeant named Kwashira to influence the police officer to provide favourable testimony for robbery suspect called Nickson Mazaranye.
But Nyandoro found that the state’s case was weak and did not have evidence.
Nyandoro then acquitted Chenjerai and Zakkaria at the close of the state’s case.
”The application made by the accused persons is granted and both accused are discharged at the close of the state case and found not guilty and acquitted,” Nyandoro ruled.
In the ruling the Nyandoro said the police witnesses and the state failed to prove a case against Chenjerai and Zakkaria.
Chenjerai and Zakkaria were represented by Harare lawyer, Tafadzwa Hungwe of Samukange and Hungwe Attorneys.
The prosecutor who led the state’s case is Thomas Chanakira.
