Nairobi, Kenya- At least 16 people were killed in Kenya by police in nationwide protests against brutality by law enforcement agents who killed people last year.
Hundreds were injured as Kenya police and protesters fought running battles in many towns and cities in the east African country.
Police fired live ammunition, rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the protesters who came out in the thousands to raise their grievances against Kenya President William Ruto.
Police on pictures and video footage were seen beating people in violence against the protests.
People had taken to the streets to commemorate a year after a youth led protest against Ruto and his government led to the deaths of at least 60 people.
But the police and security agents broke out the protests resulting in running battles between the protesters and law enforcement agents.
The protesters were chanting slogans “Ruto Must Go” calling for the president to resign.
Amnesty International,a global human rights body said Kenya government must protect protesters.
”Kenyan authorities must respect, protect and facilitate people’s right of peaceful assembly and not use unlawful force on protesters.#ProtectTheProtest ✊,” Amnesty International said on X.
