Kariba – Zimbabwe police on Monday said the Kariba boat accident deaths have reached 92 after more bodies were discovered floating in the vast Lake.
”The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that as at 1500 hours today, the Kariba Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat accident death toll is now 92 after eight bodies were recovered from Lake Kariba,” the police said.
The ferry accident occurred last week on Tuesday when the overloaded boat capsized.
At least 67 people were rescued while 92 have been confirmed dead to date but rescue efforts continue.
The boat carrying capacity was 90.
The accident has been declared a national disaster by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The Kariba town which houses Lake Kariba has in the past week plunged into mourning as most people who died come from the town and surrounding areas.
Police said they have supplied two big boats, two small boats, and deployed 40 police sub-Aqua members to help in rescue efforts.
The Zimbabwe National Army also has a contingent of divers and boats which have been helping in the search for bodies.
