Harare – An 18 year-old man, Succeed Mukaro has been sentenced to two years in jail for stealing mobile phones worth US$ 15 915 from a shop at Sam Levy Village that is owned by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife Miniyothabo.
”He (Mukaro) was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment, of which 2 years were suspended for 5 years on the usual conditions and 1 year was suspended on condition that the offender restitutes an amount of US$ 6 295,” the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
”On the 31st of May 2025, Mukaro smashed the shop’s glass front and stole high-end gadgets including iPhones, Samsung Galaxies, Huawei, phones, tablets, Apple Airpods, and a Kalobee smartwatch. Following a tip-off, detectives from CID Homicide Harare recovered several of the stolen devices being sold at Ximex Mall and arrested two sellers who linked Mukaro the goods to Mukaro.”
The NPA said Mukaro’s fingerprints matched with those that were taken by police at the crime scene.
”His fingerprints matched those lifted at the scene. His brother, Sydney Mukaro, was also found with a stolen phone. The value of the stolen goods which were not recovered is US$6 295,” the NPA said.
Colonel Baloyi-Chiwenga runs a shops that include Style by Minnie which is a fashion boutique that specializes in selling clothes for all age groups.
She also has a Facebook page where she posts about fitness and her life with her husband.
Cases of robberies and theft have been increasing in the country as the economic crisis deepens with unemployment in Zimbabwe hovering over 80 percent.
