Harare – Zimbabwe top lawyer and politician Tendai Biti on Saturday wrote a moving message on the death of former Zambian president Edgar Chagwa Lungu who died this week in South Africa.
Biti, a former senior member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and the Movement for Democratic party was arrested in Zambia in 2018 after fleeing persecution in Zimbabwe after disputed elections.
”Edgar Chagwa Lungu is no more . In our culture , dead man commit no evil . Rest in peace Edgar but we still bear your scars !!@HHichilema,” Biti wrote on his X handle.
Biti fled the country after the disputed 2018 elections in which the MDC had declared that their candidate Nelson Chamisa as winner.
”In a normal country, Chamisa would be sworn in right now,” Biti said after the 2018 elections.
He sought asylum in Zambia but it was rejected leading to his deportation to Zimbabwe.
Biti and the MDC accuse Lungu of acting from instructions from Harare to deport the senior politician.
There was post election violence on August 1, 2018 after the army killed six people in Harare’s central business district following protests against delays in releasing the election results.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared winner of the 2018 elections.
Biti was later freed by the courts of the charges he faced of announcing results before the elections officials do so.
