Johannesburg – The Zambian government which was determined to stop the burial of former president Edgar Lungu outside the country has now agreed that the ex-leader can be buried in South Africa after losing in court.
The Zambian government agreed to the burial of Lungu in South Africa after it lost it’s case in the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Lungu died in South Africa about a year ago.
The government of Zambia and current President Hakainde Hichilema wanted to preside over the burial of Lungu but the Lungu family refused.
The Lungu family said Lungu had instructed that if he dies he would not want his political rival Hichilema to preside over his burial.
“This is now a private matter for the Lungu family to proceed with their desired burial in the Republic of South Africa,” Muhlo Kabesha, Zambia’s Attorney General said.
”Government’s purpose throughout the last 12 months has been to honor the Sixth President in line with the precedent of how previous Presidents have been honoured.”
Lungu ruled Zambia from 2015 to 2021 after which he lost to Hichilema in presidential elections.
