Paris, France – Former France president, Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in jail for criminal conspiracy of allegedly getting an election funding deal with late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Judge Nathalie Gavarino made the judgment in Paris.
Sarkozy,70, allegedly got election funding for his successful election win in 2007 from the billionaire Gaddafi.
The former French leader was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in which he benefitted from millions of illicit euros he from Gaddafi.
Sarkozy was also fined €100 000 and banned from holding public office for life.
Sarkozy was acquitted of other charges.
He has vowed to launch an appeal against the sentence.
The jailing of Sarkozy reads like karma after the former French leader played a key role in the violent ouster of his former friend Gaddafi.
